The Toronto Maple Leafs are a professional ice hockey team based in Toronto, Ontario. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team is owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, Ltd. and coached by Sheldon Keefe. The Maple Leafs have won thirteen Stanley Cup championships, second only to the Montreal Canadiens’ twenty-four.

The Maple Leafs were founded in 1917 as one of the original six teams of the NHL. The club was owned by the Arena Company, which was managed by Conn Smythe. The franchise was renamed the Toronto St. Patricks in 1919 due to financial difficulties before being purchased by Smythe and renamed the Maple Leafs in 1927. The team has played at Air Canada Centre since 1999. The Maple Leafs were originally affiliated with the National Hockey Association (NHA). They joined the NHL in 1926 as part of the expansion.

The club’s last championship came in 1967 when they defeated the Montreal Canadiens in six games to win their second Stanley Cup. The Maple Leafs have not appeared in a Stanley Cup Final since then. Their most recent appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs was in 2013 when they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in seven games during the first round before losing to the Boston Bruins in seven games during the second round.

The Maple Leafs have a long-standing rivalry with the Detroit Red Wings, and also have rivalries with the Montreal Canadiens and the Ottawa Senators.

The Maple Leafs have retired thirteen numbers in honor of 16 players, including the first in professional sports. In addition, several individuals who hold an association with the club have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

In terms of value, the franchise is worth an estimated $1.45 billion CAD, making them the most valuable franchise in Canada and second overall in the NHL behind the New York Rangers.
